quality preventive care from the dentist in lancasterMost people know they should visit the dentist every six months, but they don’t do it. It takes about 4 hours out of the 8,760 that fill up a year — and in exchange, you can enjoy a happy, healthy smile for a lifetime. It’s a small exchange for such a big reward, so why do most people skip out on their regular visits to the dentist? Patients of all ages should visit Dr. Sean Moriarty, the dentist in Lancaster, at least twice a year. Learn more about why below.

Early Detection for Lasting Oral Health

The goal of regular preventive care is to stop problems before they start — and catch them early when they do get the chance to develop. Early detection is key for providing the most conservative, successful treatment of cavities, gum disease, broken or worn dental work, and even oral cancer.

When we see your teeth regularly, we can spot weak areas in the tooth enamel before they turn into cavities. Remineralization with topical fluoride treatments and improved dental hygiene at home can strengthen the area to keep your teeth healthy. Early stages of gum disease are easily reversed with improved dental hygiene, too. And catching oral cancer in the earliest stages is the best way to improve overall outcomes.

When it comes to your oral health, the earlier we catch any problem, the better for your overall wellbeing. And the secret to that is in the six month checkup and cleaning.

What to Expect During a Checkup and Cleaning

When you visit our office for a regular preventive appointment, we’ll begin by discussing your oral health and any changes that you may have noticed since the last time you visited us. Do you have more tooth sensitivity than usual? Persistent bad breath? We’ll take careful notes on any important information and then get to work cleaning and examining your smile.

During the cleaning, one of our dental hygienists uses special tools to remove the plaque and tartar that cause tooth decay and gum disease from the surface of your teeth. If you have pockets between your teeth and gums, that’s an indication of gum disease — we will measure the areas and determine the best plan of action for reversing or preventing periodontal infection.

After your teeth are sparkling clean, Dr. Moriarty will examine your smile as well as any x-rays that we have taken. What’s he looking for during the examination? The warning signs of any number of oral health hazards, including…

  • Cavities on the chewing surface or between teeth
  • Malfunctioning dental work, like leaking fillings or crowns
  • Weak or worn teeth that indicate nighttime teeth grinding
  • TMJ problems
  • Oral cancer

If issues are found, we will put together a plan for restorative treatments to help you get the follow-up care you need, as soon as possible.
