Am I A Candidate for Dental Implants?
If you are suffering from tooth loss, Mor Smiles can help restore your missing teeth with dental implants. We offer single tooth replacements, multiple tooth replacements, and the All-on-4® Treatment Concept. Which dental implant you need will depend on your particular situation and the number of teeth you are missing. Come on in so we can discuss the options available.
With the advances in medicine and dentistry, we are able to provide our patients with dental implants, even to those who may not have previously been considered candidates for this oral surgery. Dental technology and procedures such as ridge augmentations, bone grafts, and sinus lifts allow us to make all of our patients candidates for dental implants.
What is a Ridge Augmentation?
When a patient suffers tooth loss, it is not just the teeth that are affected. This might sound strange, but it is true. When the patient’s mouth has space created by tooth loss it creates a whole host of problems for the jaw and the gums. Most patients are unaware of the oppositional force necessary to keep the jawbone healthy. This force is brought about every time we bite down and chew. As the teeth come together with the natural motion of the jaw, it creates a force which helps the jawbone to remain strong. When this force is lost, the bone can begin to break down and deteriorate to the point of being reabsorbed into the body.
When patients lose teeth, they also lose the supportive structure which holds the lips and cheeks in the appropriate places. If that is lost, the lips and cheeks will sag inward drastically changing how the person appears. A ridge augmentation procedure can help to restore the patient’s jawline and gumline.
What is Involved with a Ridge Augmentation Procedure?
For a ridge augmentation, we first start with bone material that will be harvested from a site on the patient’s body and applied to an area in need of treatment. While it does not matter how much time has passed between when a tooth has been extracted to when the augmentation procedure is performed for a successful procedure, it does matter in the sense that multiple procedures might be necessary in order to fully correct the issue.
For the augmentation procedure to begin, the jawbone has to be exposed. To do this, a small incision is made over the site, and once exposed, the bone grafting tissue is applied directly to the bone. Sutures hold the material in place and the incision is closed allowing it to heal.
For most patients, it takes more than a month to fully recover. It is important for the patient to be careful with brushing and flossing so the sutures do not pull free. Patients should also closely monitor their diet, choosing softer foods until the healing is complete.
If a patient has had their jawbone weakened due to disease such as widespread gum disease, ridge augmentation surgery is ideal. It adds lost strength and mass to the bone at which point other corrective surgeries, such as dental implants, can be recommended. Patients with questions regarding this procedure can come into our office which is located at Mor Smiles.
